How much does a new Metal Staircase Cost?

All of our metal staircase and wood staircase range are bespoke and made to measure. Each one just as unique as the last, this means it is very difficult to give each one a set cost. We promise fair prices all year round without the use of sales and one-off discounts, so we would like to share some of our recent quotations and orders to show the price with potential customers.

If you are new to the market of staircase design, the chances are you have no idea what this kind of product and service cost…. this ends now 🙂

Steel Staircase Design

For new staircases or large scale renovations we usually first ask to see the plans of the project. This helps us to gauge the style of home and what space we are working with, allowing us to offer the best advice possible as staircase specialists. Mr Varley originally wanted a floating staircase, but after viewing the plans we advised that a floating design requires a structural wall all around and the set of stairs before the turn are open on the left.

Instead we chose to go for a white powder coated steel design. These strings would essentially disappear against the white walls and draw focus to the Oak treads instead. One simple but elegant trick on creating a floating effect staircase.

We would always advise on installing a handrail on the staircase, but many of our clients prefer to finish the staircase with frameless glass instead. If this is a desire, we would always recommend using 17.5 laminated glass balustrades to pass building control.

We can offer a variety of styles of treads to suit the clients taste, this particular style shows a 32mm American White oak tread with a flush-faced sub riser, giving an ‘L’ shaped tread from the side. This allows us to keep the open gap between the treads below 100mm to pass building control, but still achieve that open effect that our clients love. However there is also the option of upgrading to 100mm-120mm solid engineered treads too, (this does increase the cost) it is a pure luxury item 🙂

White Metal Staircase Price

Mr Green sent us the plans that were produced by his architect for a feature T shape staircase. All companies that Mr Green spoke to wished to install a typical newel post system staircase, these are very easy to manufacture and seen in the majority of the homes around the UK. It was clear this calibre of home required something that would give the entrance hallway the real wow factor.

After the consultation the assigned designer Adam, came up with this idea of a minimalist open staircase with a continuous feature handrail, to really frame the staircase. A really elegant and contemporary way to open the space in a hallway, allowing the skylight and feature windows to flood through the entire home!

One of the best characteristics of using steel as opposed to timber, is the structural advantages. Typically on a T shape staircase, there would be structural posts going to the ground. This makes a huge effect on the space on the ground floor of the home as it creates obstacles to walk around, but also effects what furniture / decor you place around the underside staircase.

Whenever we quote for staircases, we would always prefer quote for the full landing gallery to be finished by First Step Designs too. This ensures that the whole staircase and well opening is set to match and work as one complete piece of furniture. But we do have certain clients that prefer to leave the landing balustrade off the quotation (this is not one of those)

We offer the same service and guarantee on all our staircases, steel, timber, renovation, glass… and included in all our quotations are the following services:

Metal and glass zig zag staircase

Mr Woodhams is converting a beautiful town house in central London and was very open to the style of staircase that would work best in his home. The open plan living space is quite tight and the staircase is at the centre of the property, to save space the best staircase to fit is a 6 winder staircase. Quite a tight and less comfortable staircase than most other flights, but very suitable for this type of home.

Due to the small space, we wanted to create an open staircase as to not make the space look any smaller. Using minimal materials is fine, but we needed the structure to support this… a metal staircase is the clear choice!

Our team discussed with Mr Woodhams, what kind of interior he was trying to achieve in his home and this helps us to decide what staircase would work for him. Our ‘Brace’ steel staircase creates a zig zag profile staircase, keeping the side sections of the staircase very thin and streamline. Due to the position of the staircase, it will be mainly viewed from the side and this is when it looks its best! Other steel styles are available, but Brace is our most lightweight design.

To compliment the open staircase even more, we used structural glass balustrades. The glass is a key part of the staircase and once fit in place, it makes the staircase even more rigid. To keep the open feel Mr Woodhams did not want any handrails at all, this means we use 17.5 laminated glass to pass building control and achieved a fully frameless finish to the metal staircase.

In addition to passing building control, the maximum gap that is allowed on a staircase is 100mm. So we have a few options of how to close the gap between treads, but for Mr Woodhams it had to be glass subrisers. This reduces the gap down to 95mm to easily pass all regulations, all the while appearing as a completely open staircase.  These are grooved and bonded into our solid 40mm American White Oak treads that are finished with an anti slip lacquer for safety.

Benefits of a metal staircase

If we were to manufacture this style staircase from timber we would need full strings (sides of the staircase) measuring approx 240mm in depth. In addition, a large double newel post would be needed in order to support the 6 winder turn… Imagine the difference that this would make to the home, it would look so cramped and not effective to the remainder of the home. Additionally, frameless glass would not work around newel posts, it would finish looking more like an uncomplete design. Upon our design consultations we would never advise on any that we would not like in our own homes and make all our clients fully are of what works and what does not work… but we can design and manufacture anything as long as you are happy!
