The big hits
Frameless glass staircases
Frameless glass balustrades offer maximum light flow and uninterrupted sightlines. Our frameless configurations feature 12mm toughened glass (when including a handrail) or 17.5mm toughened laminated glass for true minimalist designs.
Note: Structural frameless glass staircases have weight and load requirements that only make them suitable for new-build projects.
Floating stairs with glass balustrades
The ultimate architectural combination and the height of staircase ambition, this configuration creates powerful focal points; however, also demand immense engineering precision.
Timber and glass stairs
Beautifully finished timber and glass balustrade stairs bring warmth and comfort to any home. We craft bespoke designs using oak, walnut, or beech treads, pairing them with ultra-clear low iron glass for sharp contrast, or introduce grey or bronze tints to soften the look or achieve the desired ambience.
Glass stairs with lights
When combined with either undertread or recessed wall lighting, glass balustrade stairs can create a beautiful ambience at night-time while also illuminating the home in a soft glow and making the stairs safer to use. Adding glass balustrades and lighting is a popular upgrade option, especially for older, full-timber staircases.

The First Step Designs Difference
Glass staircases are never just glass—they’re compositions of glass, steel, timber, stone, tile, microconcrete, or more, with each material performing a specific role.
At First Step Designs, we understand how each material behaves and interacts with the broader structure over the span of decades, even with heavy regular use. We’re proud to deliver glass stairs covered by industry-leading performance and durability guarantees and see them as a testament to our engineering standards and manufacturing precision.
We don’t craft decorative glass stairs, we build architectural features designed to last.

When using 17.5mm toughened laminated glass, a handrail is not strictly necessary; however, we still recommend one for safety.
They are technically possible and do exist; however, they’re not really a practical solution for residential homes and exist more as showpieces. For UK homes, ‘glass stairs’ refer to stairs that combine glass balustrades with steel and/or timber for strength and durability.
In most cases, yes. Our 8mm and 10mm toughened framed glass balustrades are both popular for staircase renovations.
