After nearly 10 years, First Step Designs has made its debut on Grand Designs with a custom design that perfectly complements this remarkable project. Take a moment to learn more about our grand designs staircase.
Rosa and Craig's project was truly unique. They transformed their family's old reservoir into a home, turning a building never intended for dwelling into a space full of potential. The staircase was to take center stage, becoming the heart of their new home.
How to design a Grand Designs Staircase
We follow a stringent design process with each client to ensure the final result is perfect. We begin with a phone consultation and pricing exercise to confirm we are the right fit for our customers. Following this, we create a full CAD concept of our design proposal and share it with the client in an online meeting, allowing for changes to perfect the design to the customer's taste. Sometimes we hit the nail on the head the first time, while other times, there are several stages of development. Either way, we love this process as it ensures every design is unique to the customer, not only in terms of the staircase layout but also its complete specification. This includes choosing the perfect materials, finishes, and structures. For this project, we decided on a natural oak finish to match the upstairs flooring in the reservoir, complemented by black steelwork.
How to make a Grand Designs Staircase
After the design stage and the final survey, we refine our concept drawings for production. Every element of the staircase is manufactured from CAD drawings to ensure the precision required in staircase design. This process involves laser-cut steelwork integrated with CNC-cut timber and glass. Our tolerances are extremely tight, as metal staircase structures demand perfection and cannot be adjusted to fit like their wooden counterparts.
A filmed installation | NO PRESSURE!
For the past 10 years, our expert installation teams have been installing staircases nationwide. However, this is the first time a full film crew has documented every moment of our work. We are confident in our processes, which include a thorough test build on CAD and a physical test build prior to installation, ensuring that every detail is meticulously checked. This allows us to install with confidence, and we back our work with a 10-year warranty.
