The ultimate modern staircase. Floating staircase, matte black finish, glass balustrades – what’s not to love!

Project Overview
This stunning barn conversion overlooking Greater Manchester was designed with a dedicated space for a cantilever staircase. Having worked with the builder previously, we were able to collaborate early in the process — the walls were constructed to our specifications to ensure a true floating staircase could be achieved without compromise.
Within a darker area of the property, our goal was to allow light to travel freely and create a sense of openness throughout the interior. The result is a seamless blend of modern architecture and functional elegance.

Embedded structural Glass
Straight staircases are often simple and effective, but this project presented a unique challenge. The well opening was angled at 45°, and there was no prebuilt landing to connect the two staircase runs.
While prebuilt landings can sometimes simplify construction, the complex geometry of this opening required a floating landing design — with cantilevered sections, concealed fixings, and clean, uninterrupted detailing.

The Challenge

We took full control of the custom landing design to ensure every element worked in perfect harmony. Using a 3D digital survey, we captured every detail of the existing structure, allowing us to engineer a cranked box-section half landing that precisely aligned both staircases.
This prefabricated design ensured the floating staircase connected flawlessly, achieving the minimalist look and matte black finish the client envisioned — with no visible fixings and uncompromised detailing.
