Project Overview

The Zig zag oak staircase

There are endless ways to style a zig zag staircase, but when our clients want no visible steel, the result is something special — just like this stunning project in Carmarthenshire.

By utilising the structural strength of steel, we eliminated the need for bulky support legs often seen in timber-only designs. The result? A floating oak staircase that’s elegant, seamless, and completely free of compromise. This project truly demonstrates how craftsmanship and engineering can come together to deliver a showpiece staircase that feels both light and strong.

Floating turns with no visible supports, fixings, or anything other than oak and glass

When staircases are made purely from timber, they typically require posts and supports to meet structural loading requirements — ensuring stability and reducing movement or creaking over time.

However, this often leads to a cluttered, less refined aesthetic. The Torrance family wanted the strength of steel without the industrial look, and a zig zag oak detail rarely seen in domestic interiors. The challenge? To deliver a floating staircase that looked entirely timber — but was secretly powered by precision engineering.

The Challenge

A hidden steel skeleton and zig zag precision oak

To achieve a true precision zig zag staircase, we prefabricated a concealed steel skeleton that was then fully clad in solid European white oak. This approach creates the illusion of a solid timber core, while maintaining exceptional strength and long-term stability.

Although this method involves twice the materials and installation time compared to standard designs, the result is unmatched in both quality and appearance.

Each glass balustrade is securely bolted to the hidden steel structure, providing total peace of mind and a flawless finish. The embedded glass and oak zig zag detailing complete the illusion — delivering a feature staircase that is as strong as it is stunning.

Words from the client

“The team really listened and understood what I was hoping to achieve. I wasn’t sure how it could be done — I’d seen similar zig zag staircase designs online, but most turned out to be just CAD visuals. First Step Designs made it a reality, and they did it without compromising on safety or quality. I couldn’t be more impressed with the result.”
