Wide Floating Staircase with Glass Balustrades

Project: Brimpsfield

We worked alongside Stonewood Builders to create one of our biggest Spine staircases yet in the heart of Gloucester. The super impressive renovation project involved adding a huge modern extension to a listed barn to create a substantial family home. The entrance hallway was the key feature that linked the old and the new areas of the property and this was the home of our New Spine Staircase.

Initially the client wished for a floating staircase, but since the existing walls were not suitable to take the load, it made complete sense to choose a central spine detail for not only a similar effect, but this sits away from these feature walls to allow them to remain untouched.  This staircase measures a width of 1350mm with a huge 100mm thick oak tread. An unheard of level of comfort. This encouraged us to create the spine 70mm larger than usual on both faces to make the spine look more in keeping with the large width.

In addition to the staircases, we insist that we take control of the landing balustrades so that this would all match and the finish would be flawless on the ground floor and the first floor. HOWEVER, the lower staircase and handrails were completed by a different contractor and these do not flow as well as our staircase handrails as this was not planned to the extent that we go through.
